First steps to establish a Bioengineering Unit were done already in 1977. The BEU was a part of the Physiology Department. In 1984 Biomedical Engineering Unit (BEU) was established at the Faculty of Medicine in Jabriya to provide faculty wide bioengineering assistance. Unit consists of the Electronic Workshop (oriented toward biomedical electronics) and Mechanical Workshop (oriented toward biomedical mechanics). Both workshops are mutually dependent and closely joined on the basics of biomedical engineering disciplines. The Electronic Workshop and Mechanical Workshop contribute significantly to the faculty in providing services and support for teaching, research and clinical activities of other departments from the biomedical engineering point of view.
