The Department of Psychiatry is staffed with one Professor, four Assistant Professors, one senior technician, 2 technicians, one psychiatric researcher and one translator. The Department undertakes multidimensional responsibilities comprising under and post graduate teaching, clinical services, research activities, and community services. The Department delivers 8-week psychiatric teaching to the 7th year medical students and offers four Elective courses for the 5th year medical students.

The Department made substantial contributions to the Curriculum reforms program, initiated by the Faculty of Medicine in 2007. To this end, a series of seminars and workshops, aimed at the development of Problem-based Learning (PBL) and training of academic staff and the clinical tutors, were organized both at the Faculty and the Hospital level. The transformation of the traditional didactic lecture-based to the PBL-driven curriculum, introduction of Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)’ Mini Case Examination (Mini C Ex); and Medical School Days teaching activities like student-led seminars and multidisciplinary seminars, are some of the innovations adopted by the Department during the last four years.

The clinical responsibilities of the Department include delivery of comprehensive general psychiatry, anxiety and mood disorders, liaison psychiatry, and old age psychiatry services in the Kuwait Center for Mental Health. The Department provides forensic psychiatry services for the selected patients referred by the courts from time to time. The Department has accomplished numerous research projects at national as well as international level.
