Variscite

Variscite is an phosphate mineral of aluminum with the composition AlPO4.2H2O . This sample is from the Fairfield, Utah. It is on display in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. The sample measures about 20x20 cm.

Variscite's apple green color comes from traces of chromium. It is popular for carvings and ornamental stones. The yellow veins contain crandallite, wardite, and other phosphate minerals.
