Labradorite

Labradorite is a silicate of composition (Ca,Na)(Si,Al)4O8. These samples are on display at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. The sample above left is about 10x10 cm and above right is about 4x10 cm. They are displayed under ultraviolet light to show their fluorescence. These samples and the one at right below are from Nain, Newfoundland, Canada.

The carved figure at left is labeled 810.7 carats. It is from Labrador, Newfoundland, Canada.

The laboradorite sample at right is labeled as variety spectrolite. It is about 8x7 cm and is from Ylijarvi, Karelia, Finland.
